Breaking the Color Line in Medicine: Summary Comments
Congratulations on the fine book... It is very well written and will be an important publication for many decades. (Bronwyn, Colorado)

I spent several hours yesterday afternoon and last night and went through the book from cover to cover. It is extremely well written! (Axel, Tennessee)

I found it very impressive. It was beautifully bound and the photos and displays very appealing. The writing was crisp and easy. Congratulations. (Alfredo, California)

... excellent job! ....it can be a great educational tool for today's youth in stimulating their interest to pursue a career in healthcare.... with the healthcare industry experiencing a shortage of minority talent. Less than two percent of presidents, chief executive officers, and chief operating officers of healthcare organizations are minorities. Your book is definitely an inspiration to those like myself in the industry to "keep on, keepin' on!" I believe it's just as important that the book be in the Boys & Girls Clubs (along with a mentoring component).... What better way to captivate, stimulate, and educate the future. (Forrest, Illinois)
I would like to congratulate you on the publication of your text.... I found the book to be a most interesting review of the history of the importance of African Americans in Ophthalmology in the United States.... As an alumnus of the residency training program, I was profoundly affected by three of the people listed in your book... (Douglas, California)

I wanted to congratulate you on a job very well done.... The book is delightful... (Lanning, Alabama)

I enjoyed your article very much and was pleased to see you also have a larger publication this year as well. These are issues that are most important to raise and you have done so in your usual articulate way. (Richard, Maine)

Just a short note to say "way to go" on your new book. News such as this is very positive and inspirational. (Pat, Missouri)

I can not thank you enough... It is a wonderful book and extremely well written. (Maurice, Mississippi)

I am very proud.... to have worked with many of the people you have included in the book. Congratulations. We still have a long way to go in attracting qualified underrepresented ethnic minorities to ophthalmology. (Thomas, Iowa)

Congratulations.... it tells a story that needs to be told, and tells it well. (Robert, California)

A remarkable anthology of twenty-four poets
The Franconia, New Hampshire, farm of the American poet Robert Frost was turned into a museum and center for poetry and the arts in 1976. From that time, "The Frost Place" has been annual event wherein an emerging poet has been invited to spend the summer living in the house where Frost once lived and wrote some of his greatest poetry. The Breath Of Parted Lips: Voices From The Robert Frost Place, Volume One is a remarkable anthology of twenty-four poets, each of whom won that honor of a summer's residency and document the success of the original concept as a means of generating outstanding poetry while nurturing the poet's muse in the rooms and views that were once the inspiration of the great Robert Frost. Poem At 40: Windwashed--as if standing next to the highway,/a truck long as the century sweeping by,/all things at last bent in the same direction./An opening, as if all/the clothes my ancestors ever wore/dry on lines in my body:/wind-whipped, parallel with the ground,/some sleeves sharing a single clothespin/so that they seem to clasp hands,/seem to hold on.//And now that I can see/up the old women's dresses,/there's nothing but a filtered light./And now that their men's smoky breath/has traversed the earth,/it has nothing to do with them./And now that awkward, fat tears of rain/slap the window screen,/now that I'm naked too,/cupping my genitals, tracing with a pencil/the blue vein between my collar bone and breast,/I'll go to sleep when I'm told.

A "How-To" Guide for the Newly Married
I bought this book shortly after my wedding. The book is full of good advice about everything from choosing your first home together (house, condo, apartment), how to combine furnishings, storage ideas, decorating, and even how to divvy up the chores. Having a lot of stuff, my husband and I found the chapter about storage the most helpful. We also loved the checklists that helped us prioritize. Overall, this is a handy book for *any* couple moving in together.

Bruckner Remembered
Published in Paperback by Faber & Faber (January, 2001)
Author: Stephen Johnson
Average review score:

Informative and poignant
A gem of a book in this wonderful series --- this small volume will surprise you with anecdotes and stories of Bruckner's life --- definitely not the theoretical exercise that is popularly supposed. Interesting in particular is the clash between Bruckner and Brahms --- between the sublime and the merely very good. Highly recommended in place of the overpriced and overinflated academic Bruckner studies which are proliferating.

Buffalo Woman
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (December, 1995)
Author: Dorothy M. Johnson
Average review score:

wonderful...and heartbreaking.
My grade school was getting rid of some of its overstock by giving away some of its books. Dorothy M. Johnson's Buffalo Woman was one I happened to take. I am eternally glad I did. She does a wonderful job of pulling the reader into the story. When reading this book, you will begin to feel like you know the characters personally. The fact that they are Native Americans living about two hundred years in the past doesn't matter. Johnson's writing enables the reader to identify with them anyhow. I highly recommend this one, especially to those with an interest in Native American culture.

True stories about fifty different people
Compiled and written by Civil War Reenactor and enthusiast Clint Johnson, Bull's Eyes And Misfires is an unique anthology of true stories about fifty different people whose obscure and often overlooked roles had lasting impact on the course of the American Civil War. Ranging from how Joseph Anderson and George Rains efficiently kept the Confederacy supplied with cannon and gunpowder, to how Julia Grant helped her husband General U. S. Grant win battles, to "Crazy Bet" Van Lew who ran one of the best possible spy networks for the North, to a series of terrible and costly mistakes of judgment attributed to leaders on both sides, Bull's Eyes And Misfires offers a wealth of lore and evidence of how even small details can have great effects on the tide of battle and is very highly recommended reading for all American History and Civil War buffs.

Incredible photography that is soul piercing
I was with Peter Johnson on a recent trip to South Africa. He is a remarkable man and an outstanding photographer. He has done so much for the economy of South Africa and is so savvy to the opportunites and plight of these people. The topic of the Bushmen and its documentation will astound you. The photography leaves you with the feeling of the dust on their feet and the soul piercing look in their eyes.
